CHECK YOUR HOLE GOLF DAY A SUCCESS

The very first CQ Health Assess 'Check your Hole' Golf Day was held Sunday 22nd August at Mirani Golf Club.  The weather did not disappoint and nearly a hundred participants took part in what was to be a fun and informative day.

Ann Maree Brightman, CQ Health Assess Co-ordinator said "The 'Check Your Hole' Mens Health Golf Day was held to raise awareness of men's health issues'. 'In general, men are more reluctant to visit their GP to get a check up, especially when it comes to preventative medicine and early intervention. This was a way of getting the message through in a roundabout and fun way" she said.

Teams on the day got to have a go at the 'wobbly club' and were issued various challenges throughout the game. Many of the players dug their hands in their pockets when they were 'fined for charity' for various misdemeanors, with fellow team members jovially dobbing them in for a good cause.  Nearly $400 was raised for the charities involved with additional donations to come from the Lions Club who did a fantastic job providing the bbq lunch for the day.  Profits will be added to the kitty.

Health information was available at every hole ranging from diabetes to prostate cancer, with participants bearing up to the results of waist measurements and AUSDRISK (diabetes screening) and what the outcome would be for those overweight or not looking after their health. Ann-Maree said "for many, the screenings were an eye opener. Chronic disease, diabetes and heart disease occur more commonly in men, and their life expectancy is five years less than that of women" she said. "What was most gratifying at the end of the day was to overhear some of the men talking amongst themselves about their health in general, diet etc. The message seems to be getting through" she said.

The day would not have been possible without the sponsorship of Foundation 49, Mycorp Psychology, Lions, The Kidney Foundation, Industry Hub, HotFM, Parklands Mackay Business Hub, CQ Health Assess and CQ Community & In Home Care along with the various donations from local businesess, Bunnings, Kmart, Mackay Wholesale Meats, Bullivants, Golf King Superstore.

Ann-Maree said they had received rave reviews from the day. "The CQ Health Assess 'Check Your Hole Mens Health Golf Day' will be an annual even and rest assured, next year will be even bigger and better" she said.
