MESSAGE GETS THROUGH with “CHECK YOUR HOLE Men’s Health Charity Golf Day”

At least we hope it did!!  22 teams signed up for a fantastic day of ambrose golf on Sunday 14th August at the Pioneer Valley Golf Club at Mirani.  Whilst fun was the order of the day, the event held by CQ Health Assess was used to promote a men’s health message and raise money for foundation 49.

Lynne Kingston, CQ Health Assess Co-ordinator said ‘This is the 2nd year of the annual event and the ‘Check your Hole’ Men’s Health Golf Day is a good way to raise awareness of men’s health issues’.  ‘In general men are more reluctant to visit their GP to get a check up, especially when it comes to preventative medicine and early intervention.  This was a way of getting the message through in a roundabout but fun way’ she said.

Holes throughout the course displayed information about various health issues such as prostate cancer, heart health, liver, kidney, diet etc and Registered Nurses from CQ Nurse conducted various screenings such as waist measurements, blood pressures, AUDSRISK for diabetes etc and discussed the implications of the results.

Ms Kingston said “For many of the players, the health screenings were a shock, many didn’t realize they had high blood pressure, nor notice their waist increasing in size over the years. Chronic disease, diabetes and heart disease occur more commonly in men, resulting in male life expectancy being on average 6 years less than that of women” she said.  “What was most rewarding at the end of the day was to overhear some of the men talking amongst themselves about their health in general and plans to visit their GP.  The message seems to be getting through”.

It wasn’t all serious business though and teams on the day got to have a go at the ‘wobbly club’ and were issued various challenges throughout the game i.e the longest drive, ball in the hoop etc.  Participants were extremely generous digging their hands in their pockets for raffles and ‘fines for charity’ for various misdemeanors on the day, one misdemeanor was swearing which turned out to be a veritable gold mine for the cause J

Over $3,000 was raised for Foundation 49 from the day including profits from the BBQ lunch which was supplied by Mirani Lions club.

The Overall winners of the day were ‘The Woodies Team’.

The day would not have been possible without the sponsorship of D&T Hydraulics and Engineering, Emeco, Industry Hub and  Parklands Mackay Business Hub, along with the various prizes donated by local businesses i.e The Good Guys, Office Works and many more.

Ms Kingston said the event was a huge success with great feedback from the players all keen to join in next year’s event and next years will be even better” she said.  The CQ Health Assess ‘Check your Hole Golf Day’ will be an annual event held the 2nd Sunday in August each year.
